Biddeford Mills Woman's Work Shoes

Pair of black womens boots, button up with heels. The shoes appear well worn and have 15 buttons on each side of the shoes. One button is not attached on the left shoe, but was included in the shoe itself. An ivory handled button hook was also found in one of the shoes to attach the buttons. ( see 2021.02.02.02)

Men's round topped black derby hat surrounded by a black ribbon. Sides are slightly tipped up. Inside has a brown lining and top is black with maker's mark inscription and it has an inscription on the inside band, "Chas A. Benoit Clothier Biddeford, ME"

Man in yellow suit carving by Adelard Coté. He is wearing a yellow suit with three buttons, has a white cap on with a red brim, and dark eyes and complexion. He has a red tie with black polka dots and a white shirt. His shoes are black and arms are movable.

Woman at spinning wheel, a carving by Adelard Cote. This is a three part carving, including the spinning wheel, woman and chair. Her arms are movable and the wheel spins. The lever on the bottom also goes up and down as the wheel moves. The carving is painted. The woman wears a brown top with long sleeves and 4 buttons. The skirt is ivory. She has blond/white hair and a bun in the back. Brown moccasin type shoes, black eyes, and dark skin. The chair is wooden with a caned, red seat made of synthetic material, possibly thin plastic. It has a straight, high back and is brown. There are 4 visible screws in the back The two backboards are slatted in place. There are wood plugs in the front of the chair, possibly covering additional screws. The spinning wheel itself has movable. parts. The wheel spins and as it does, the pedal on the. bottom goes up and down.

Wooden Adelard Cote carving of a man with a plow done in three pieces, the man, the plow, a hat. He is wearing a hat with a brown ribbon painted on it with gold edges, a red shirt, and blue clothes. He has 3 buttons on his shirt. The plow is dark red with black handles and the blade is wooden and painted a gray, silver, resembling metal. The man has gray hair under the hat. Arms are movable.

Carving of Santa sitting in a red sleigh driven by four reindeer with antlers who are all tethered together. Santa has movable arms and is in his red outfit. The four reindeer look alike and have full sets of antlers. They are all tethered together. One of the reindeers has a glued right hind leg and another has the front of his hoof missing on the left front leg hoof.

A two piece wood carving by local Folkartist, Adelard Coté. It features two large horses who are harnessed for a plow, sled, or other task. They are attached through the harness. The horses, although very similar, are not identical. Both of the horses have upright, wooden ears. The wave black manes that are set to one side and also black tails which might be made of some sort of animal hair. The have side blinders and a horse shoe shaped harness around their necks. They are not. saddled. The horses themselves have no moving parts. One horse is adorned on each side of his head. One side has rusty colored yarn and the other side has a different type of rust colored fibers, but not yarn, that looks like a tassle. The second horse is not adorned. The harness is intricate and makes use of black painted chains, leather, and wood.

Flowers in a vase oil painting by Laura B. Delisle. Frame is made of wood and approximately 4 1/2 inches wide on each edge. The frame is bevelled with ornate metallic trim, and a section of cream colored. matting material.

Hexagon shaped woman's hatbox with white cover and diagonal black stripes on edge. The cover features a black picture of a woman carrying two hatboxes. The bottom of the box is solid black. The box contained a derby hat and a black bow tie. It is made of a heavy cardboard and has an attached black string for carrying.

Man on horse is a 2 piece painted wood carving done by Franco-American Folk artist, Adelard Coté. The man has gray hair and his clothes are painted blue. There is a red shirt visible under the blue top. He has movable arms that are able to hold the reins. He is wearing maroon, lace up boots. There is a detachable saddle on the horse which is made of leather or other material. The horse has some black fibers or hair as a tail. It has no ears and has a white patch on its forehead. The bridle is on and it has a silver piece attached to it near the horse's mouth.

The Praying Man, painting by Laura B. Delisle shows a man praying while sitting at the table. His hands are clasped and eyes closed. He has a loaf of bread on the table as well as a glass with something to drink in it. The artist has signed on the lower right corner. The frame is made of wood and looks like white weathered wood with slight subtle metallic gray tones. The back of the painting is solid. particleboard and there is no paper. It is hung with a string.

The painting is framed and matted with a cream mat and a design is drawn on the perimeter of the matting in pencil. There are several trees, a large lake, and mountains in the background. The painting is signed on the lower right side by Armand Painchaud.

Small nice oval photograph are albumin prints and include people from Biddeford, ME and surrounding areas. Other locations are Goose Rock, Saco and other local areas. Some photos are missing.

Small serving dish, part of a set by Silver Birch by Royal Albert. The design has elevated sides trimmed with thin gold lines on the edges. The flat section in the center features several birch trees as well as water and flowers in various colors.

This tool, known as a button hook was used to fasten button-up shoes. It has a small metal hook on a white ivory handle. This was found inside a pair of womens button up shoes. (see 2021.02.02.01)
