Born in Biddeford, Ryan’s outlook and focus is fully grounded in the work ethic and everyday experience he inherited from his family, who were late arrivals from Quebec to work in the mills. His appointment as a high school student representative on City Council led him from being known as quiet, to finding a purpose and discovering how to make something happen. This inspired him and fueled his passion to help others and be part of something bigger than himself.
Defying expectations, he won his first election to the State legislature as a 22 year old against an established business person. An unplanned return after leaving due to term limits, led to setting his sights on being Speaker of the House. He was elected to this position as the youngest and first openly gay person in 2020.
His message: Regardless of your origins, family background and perceived barriers and whether it’s in elected office or not, it’s possible to chase a dream of doing something good for your community.
